STEMHOUSE’ VIEW ON THE 2024 GRADE 6 EXAM AT TRAN DAI NGHIA SCHOOL
On July 4th, 2024, 5th grade students (born in 2013) participated in the Tran Dai Nghia entrance exam for the academic year 2024-2025. This exam has attracted significant attention from parents whose children are about to enter secondary school. People have been talking about how hard the test was and what the passing score will be. Let’s see what our teachers think about the test!
OVERVIEW
In terms of subjects and structure, this year’s entrance exam still follows the approach of integrating knowledge from various fields such as Maths, Natural Science, Vietnamese Literature, History, Geography, and English Proficiency, making no surprises for the students.
Instead of challenging students with complex or strange questions, the exam this year emphasizes on assessing students’ ability to analyze information quickly as well as apply new information to solve problems. Additionally, the questions are also related to real-life situations. According to Stemhouse, these are also the necessary provisions for students to be ready to participate in higher levels of education in today’s era.
MATHEMATICS
This year, the Maths section focused heavily on assessing students’ ability to analyze problems quickly and reason logically through a variety of colorful thought-provoking questions such as Sudoku, flowcharts, situation analysis, pattern recognition, etc. In addition, the inclusion of real-world problems, such as painting a staircase or answering questions about football, generated excitement among the young candidates during this year’s vibrant Euro season.
2 interesting questions in Maths section
Although the thinking questions are extremely diverse and somewhat novel because they do not appear in the traditional types of questions that students often encounter at school, the questions are all at an average level, not too complicated, and do not even require high reading comprehension in the academic English section of Mathematics. Students only need to be calm and have a solid grasp of the knowledge to be able to immediately locate the familiar knowledge topics that need to be used such as: basic elementary math operations, listing methods, elimination methods, temporary hypothesis methods, divisibility/remainder problems, etc.

For the final question of applying and presenting the solution, although not difficult, besides the requirement of mastering knowledge of solids, students need to be especially careful to avoid making mistakes when dividing shapes and calculating.
ENGLISH
As for English, this year’s exam has some new topics such as: illustrations, schools, folk tales of different countries, which made the students extremely excited and surprised. However, this is not really a big challenge because these topics are still presented through familiar question formats such as: true or false, word search, multiple choice, fill in the blank, add words with a little change, etc.
Although the test does not test advanced knowledge, the multiple choice questions are quite tricky, so students need to carefully analyze the questions and answers before making a final decision.
VIETNAMESE
The multiple choice section revolves around Vietnamese knowledge of punctuation, sentence linking and understanding the meaning of words. The difficulty level of these questions is only basic and medium. This is also a familiar type of multiple choice question that students have been exposed to and practiced regularly during their studies at the Center.
In the essay section, the test materials are poetry texts and reading comprehension questions along with writing passages related to that poem. The difficulty level of the questions ranges from basic, medium (some comprehension and application questions such as questions b, c, d) and advanced in the writing section.
For average questions, students can understand the questions and answer correctly, but to a certain extent, only those who have a profound perspective on life and proficient test-taking skills can fully exploit the text and life experience to have a complete and convincing answer.
The poem in the reading comprehension section provides material for students to write the argumentative paragraph.

As for the writing exercise, the topic requires writing a 5-7 sentence argumentative paragraph presenting the opinion that listening to the sounds in life helps us know how to love. This is an argumentative essay that presents opinions to persuade others. The writing exercise is closely linked to the poem’s text in the Reading Comprehension section, creating conditions for students to have more ideas to write. The topic requires students to have a high level of ability to present arguments, evidence, and a tight, convincing argument. It is not difficult to achieve an average score, but to achieve a good or excellent score for this paragraph requires students to have a deep, subtle perception of the connection between the sounds in life and love; at the same time, be creative in their perspective.
SCIENCE – HISTORY – GEOGRAPHY
The Science questions in this exam are at a moderate level and at a basic level, most of them only require students to remember definitions and simple academic vocabulary, without requiring too much reasoning ability. The most difficult questions are related to the topic of soil, fertilizer and fair test, students may have difficulty with unfamiliar vocabulary and analyzing graphs to draw conclusions.
In the History – Geography section, the questions are also at an average level like the Science section, generally not too difficult. Students may have difficulty with the question about national border legends in the Geography section if they are not familiar with reading maps. The History section has a pretty good question 10, which not only integrates with English in reading and understanding idioms and proverbs but also requires students to deeply remember related historical events.
OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR THE “YOUNG SCHOOLERS” OF 2K13?
In general, this year’s Tran Dai Nghia school entrance exam is quite interesting, creating excitement with new topics and current events. To conquer this exam, students cannot just “parrot” familiar exercises or formulas, but need the ability to think quickly, reason coherently and be careful in each step of the exam. The exam is challenging but also an opportunity to educate positive and correct learning methods to help children take firm steps on their future learning journey.
However, the absence of some questions in the advanced application segment in this year’s exam will certainly have a significant impact on the overall picture of candidate classification. Therefore, there may be many surprises when this year’s benchmark is officially announced. However, candidates who have solid knowledge, are calm and confident will certainly conquer this year’s exam well and are completely worthy of becoming excellent students at Tran Dai Nghia school in the new school year.
