TEACHING MATH IN ENGLISH APPLYING CLIL

OVERVIEW OF CLIL

CLIL is a subject-based language learning method initiated and developed by leading linguistics professors at Cambridge University: Professors Coyle, Philip Hood and David Mash. This method aims to:

1. Introduce learners to new concepts through studying the curriculum in a non-native language.

2. Improve the ability to use language in parallel with the process of absorbing new learning content.

3. Improve language reflexes.

4. Develop logical thinking skills, creativity and critical thinking comprehensively.

5. Develop soft skills along with strengthening strong connections with community values ​​and citizenship.

The content and language integration-oriented class is not a foreign language class, nor is it a professional class translated into a foreign language. The 4C foundation of content and language integration has been established with the aim of building a unified and complete lesson.

CORE ELEMENTS OF THE CLIL METHOD

These 4 Cs represent 4 components: Content, Communication, Cognition and Culture.

1. Content: Content represents the subject, the subject matter, the knowledge and skills that students need to achieve. Content needs to be connected to life. Students need to learn practical issues and have their knowledge reinforced through theory.

2. Communication: Communication supports and strengthens foreign language learning. The orientation of integrating content and language focuses on the learner, enhancing interactive activities between teachers and students.

3. Cognition: Knowledge in the direction of integrating content and language requires high-level thinking skills, encouraging learners to understand and receive knowledge in their own way.

4. Culture: Students not only expand their knowledge of other countries’ cultures but also learn how to choose appropriate language in situations with different cultural contexts.
